Affect oil seals performance: what is the medium temperature

Oct 02, 2021

What a good oil seal pays attention to is that in addition to size, its sealing performance must be considered. DSH Seals tells you the factors that affect the sealing performance of the oil seal, including oil pressure, lip rubber performance, structural parameters, lip interference, and R value (the distance between the lip plane of the seal ring and the center plane of the spring groove) , Lip waist thickness, lip waist length, medium temperature, oil seal shaft speed, etc. may affect the sealing performance of the oil seal!

Let us first understand the extent to which the temperature of the sealing ring media affects the sealing performance of the oil seal?

What is the medium temperature in oil seal performance? Medium refers to the existence of a substance in another substance, and the latter is the medium of the former. The temperature of the medium also has an impact on the sealing performance of the lip-shaped oil seal of the rotating shaft, that is, the oil absorption per unit time decreases as the temperature of the medium increases.

If the same sealing material, medium and speed are used for the experiment, when the medium temperature is 30℃, the oil absorption is 0.07mL/min, and when the medium temperature rises to 120℃, the oil absorption is 0.032mL/min. This shows that the oil absorption is not only affected by the change in oil viscosity, but also related to the change in the operating clearance between the oil seal ring and the heated contact surface of the shaft surface.
