Why can a sealing ring seal both sides

The sealing ring is a kind of ring-shaped sealing element, which is pressed against the inner hole wall of the stationary element by its elasticity after being pressed to play a sealing role. DSH Seals tells you that one sealing ring can seal two surfaces (fitting surfaces), and the circumferential surface is preloaded by the inherent spring pressure (outward elastic force or inward elastic force); and the other is a retaining groove supported by the side. On the groove (Figure 1 shows the cross-sectional view of the two sides of the seal ring). The latter can be ensured by fluid pressure or pressure from a separate spring or similar mechanical means. It should be emphasized that if there is not enough side pressure, there may be leakage, because there is always a gap between the sealing ring and the bottom of the groove in its working environment.

It is inevitable that the sealing ring can leak through the gap of the circumferential surface of the single ring. It also depends on the size and shape of the gap. The size of the gap should be commensurate to make it more suitable for the smallest gap required for expansion after assembly. The gap can be positive or negative during manufacture, and the normal gap or interference depends on the required shrinkage and sealing force. This is why one sealing ring can seal both sides.
