Common Methods For Radial Seal Of Rotating Shaft

Nov 17, 2022

Common shaft seals include mechanical seal, packing (also called packing), oil seal, spiral seal, floating carbon ring seal, magnetic fluid seal, dry gas seal, brush seal, etc. Carbon ring seal, dry gas seal and brush seal are usually used for sealing gas; Mechanical seals, packings, and oil seals are generally used to seal liquids.

Fluid is liquid, assuming that the pressure and speed are both high, oil seals can be excluded (for light load conditions); The remaining options are mechanical seal or packing seal.

Mechanical seal is recommended for the following reasons: Compared with packing seal, it has the following advantages:

Good sealing performance, the leakage is one order of magnitude lower than the packing; Long service life; It does not need to be adjusted frequently, and it will be automatically compensated after wear; The friction power is small, generally only about 0.2-0.3 of the packing seal; No wear of shaft or shaft sleeve; Strong shock resistance, when the equipment vibrates within a certain range, it can still maintain a good sealing effect.
