The Spring Energized PTFE Seal is a spring- energized, pressure-assisted sealing device consisting of a PTFE (or other polymer) seal partially encapsulating a corrosion-resistant metal spring energizer.
Spring energised seal is an effective combination of the concepts of elastomers and metal seals. Here, we will introduce some sealing materials suitable for spring energized configurations:
Jacket--Although fluoroplastic compounds and engineering plastics can be used for spring sleeves, PTFE is widely considered the gold standard due to its excellent durability and high resistance to extrusion. Sometimes it is recommended to use polyetheretherketone(PEEK) for support rings&back up rings and high-temperature applications, while the Utra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene (UHMW-PE) is very valuable for dynamic sealing applications with high wear resistance. However, the special variability of PTFE based compounds means that there is usually a filling, lubrication, modification, or proprietary solution suitable for all working conditions.
Spring--Three different types of springs are available for sealing. All of these have the same functional intent to motivate the sealing lip. They can be applied for different application, and have various features.
Cantilever V spring: is made of thin metal sheets formed and stamped through progressive dies. It provides a very linear load curve, which means that the more it deflects, the greater the force applied. It provides more point load in the jacket, concentrating energy on the leading edge of the sealing lip. This makes it suitable for reciprocating applications that require scraping media. Multiple springs can also be stacked together to obtain greater loads.
Helical spring: is made by winding thin and flat metal strips into spiral threads, forming circular tubes. Helical has a very steep load curve and provides the highest force per linear inch. It is most commonly used in static face seals applications and low-temperature fields that require high loads. It can be generated after compression, so it is generally not recommended for dynamic applications.
Slant coil spring: is typically used in applications that require low friction and consistent loads. It has a very unique load curve where the spring force changes very little, despite different deflections. This uniform and predictable load makes it the preferred spring for most rotating applications.

Advantages
Compared to traditional (non energized) polymer or elastomer seals, spring energized seals can provide a longer service life. Because the contact pressure at the sealing lip remains high throughout the entire life of the seal. Even if the sealing material is worn, the actuator can compensate for angular misalignment within the wide working spring force deflection range to maintain a constant and uniform force on the sealing lip, thereby maintaining sealing pressure.
This suppresses the formation of leakage paths, thereby reducing maintenance intervals and increasing the normal operating time of the equipment. In addition to promoting uniform wear and maintaining constant pressure throughout the entire service life of the seal, spring energised seals also reduce medium contamination by using chemically compatible wear-resistant materials. This reduces the possibility of premature degradation and minimizes the possibility of sealing material 'detachment'
